Hi, I’m Dr. Kate.

(she/her)

Hi, I’m Kate. Licensed psychologist, but also real human. Decades of research has shown that the most important factor in therapy is the relationship between therapist and client. My highest priority in this work is co-creating a safe, warm, non-judgmental space for you to be you, just as you are.

I’m a licensed psychologist based in Minneapolis, MN, and I help clients reconnect with themselves, their loved ones, and the world.

Clients have described me as a good listener, warm, funny, and gently challenging to facilitate your growth. I aim to be professional, yet authentic in the room with you, just as I hope you will be your authentic self in the room with me. My hope is that you’ll experience therapy with me as a safe space to process the difficulties you are facing in real time.

My Education, Training, and Approach to Therapy

  • I earned my Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Houston. I completed my clinical internship at the University of Maryland, and my postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Chicago.

I’m a licensed psychologist in Texas, Minnesota, and can practice in all participating Psypact States.

In addition to being a licensed psychologist, I am also a Certified Sex Therapist through the Sexual Health Alliance.

  • I have over a decade of experience supporting couples and individuals in therapy. I have worked in a variety of settings including community mental health, a federal detention center, the Houston Fire Department, multiple college counseling centers, and private practice.

I have a passion for training novice therapists, and have taught at the undergraduate and doctoral levels. I have also provided supervision to therapists in training at various training levels.

  • For those who are interested in the nuts and bolts of the therapy process, here are the approaches I use in my work:

    • Interpersonal Process Therapy, to help you explore how your past is related to your present, and how that might be showing up in the therapy room

    • Person Centered Therapy, because you are the expert on your life

    • Multicultural and Feminist Therapies, because we do not exist in a vacuum, and our identities shape who we are and how we walk around in this world

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), to help you learn to open up and make room for life’s inevitable discomfort in the here-and now

    • Internal Family Systems (IFS), to explore the survival strategies your brilliant mind found to get you through hard times, and how those parts of you might be interfering in the present moment

    • Exposure and Response Prevention, to help those with OCD learn to stop those spiraling thoughts and behaviors and engage meaningfully in the present moment

    • Emotion Focused Couples Therapy to help my couples speak to the deep layers of pain that have gone unspoken and create new, healthy communication patterns

    • Sex Therapy, to help folks with sexual shame, desire difficulties, or other sexual concerns reconnect with themselves in a new and healthy way

    • Plain Old Therapy, because sometimes we don’t need the bells and whistles, we just need a safe, nonjudgmental space to process

A few things about me:

  • I’m originally from Houston, TX, but now call Minneapolis home.

  • I’m an avid reader, and will likely find ways to slip book recommendations into our sessions.

  • My doctoral research was focused on exploring the impact of queer media representation on the mental health of the queer community.

  • I am a big believer that humor is a crucial part of the healing process. There will be laughter in our sessions as we move through the work together!

  • I won’t understand your sports references in session, but I can go toe to toe with you on 90s and 2000s pop culture trivia.

“Just where you are, that’s the place to start.” Pema Chodron

I’m here to meet you right where you are; it doesn’t have to make sense yet. Many folks start therapy feeling overwhelmed with where to start.

Whether in person or in the comfort of your own home, I offer a warm, open, and nonjudgmental space to explore the parts of your life that have been causing you pain.
